Three Ways to Write a Stand-Out Scholarship Essay

Competition for scholarships can be fierce – but writing a great essay can help you stand out from the crowd. Follow these tips to make sure your essay or personal statement tells your story in the most compelling way possible.

1. Read the instructions carefully. This seems like such a simple tip, but it’s amazing how many people don’t follow instructions – and miss out on a potential scholarship as a result. How many reference letters do you need? Do you have to put together a portfolio? If the application package you receive doesn’t contain a checklist for what’s required, put one together yourself – and make sure all items are checked off before you send anything in.

2. Tailor your essay to your audience. One-size-fits-all may be efficient, but it’s not the most effective approach for getting your application to stand out. Is the scholarship for academic achievement? Emphasize your grades and any academic awards you’ve received. Are they looking to reward community service? Write about how you’ve made a difference in your community. Whatever you do, make sure your essay shows who you are, and isn’t just a dry recitation of your achievements – write it well, but inject some of your own personality into it.

3. Edit, edit, edit. Don’t rely on spellcheck to edit your work. Get a teacher, your parents and even your friends to check it over.
